Guacatonga is a small tree that usually grows up to 2-3 m height, mostly on clayey soils. It's is typical of tropical areas, and is located both in the forests in the plains. It's native of Cuba, Jamaica and Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Caribbean, Central America and South America (including Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Uruguay and Bolivia).

The chemical composition of guacatonga is rather complex. Scientists who have conducted research on the properties of the plant Poison found that the leaves and twigs of the plant contain a phyto-chemical called Lapacho, a compound that is known and studied as anticancer and antifungal. By studying these properties, it was discovered another group of phyto-chemical elements, called clerodane diterpeni, which were verified to be antisarcomici agents. Research has documented the wide spectrum of use of this group of elements ranging from use as an insecticide, for use as anticancer agents, and anticancer antibiotics, up to inhibitors of HIV replication.

Research on anticancer properties of guacatonga started in 1988 by a team of researchers from the Tokyo College of Pharmacy and Pharmacognosy. A first publication in 1988, reported their discovery of clerodane diterpeni and their anticancer and anti-tumor activity. Subsequent studies in the early 90s confirmed the results obtained.

In 2002, a well-known research group at the North Carolina (USA) discovered three new clerodane diterpeni in the leaves and stem of guacatonga of which were documented antifungal and anticancer properties when guacatonga was administered at low doses.

All other research on chemical elements and actions guacatonga were carried out by Brazilian researchers over the years. A group of researchers at the University of Sao Paulo, in three different studies have documented the action of antiulcer guacatonga in from acetic acid caused ulcers and those caused d H. pylori. Another research team took as an infusion of bark and leaves have properties and slightly anti-inflammatory painkillers. A university research on the following anti-inflammatory of the plant, showed that the effectiveness of extract of leaves was equal to that of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. In addition, two research groups documented that the extract of leaves was biologically active against the most common strains of bacteria that infect the food, although inactive against other common bacteria such as staphylococcus or E. coli.
